Acura / Honda NSX “mini-me”: NATS MINI-SX

The Tokyo Auto Salon (12 to 14 January) isn’t only about modded Nismo 350Zs and concept cars like the Stream. It’s also about those weird Japanese tuners like the people working at NAT’s (Nihon Automotive College) who took an early 90’s Honda Beat and turned it into “mini-me” version of the Acura / Honda NSX!

Detroit Auto Show: Acura "Advanced Sports Car Concept"

I know what you first question is so let’s get straight to the point: Yes, the Acura “Advanced Sports Car Concept” does preview the next generation Acura / Honda NSX that according to our information will debut this autumn at the Tokyo Motor Show. While design-wise the production version will definitely be toned down in comparison with the concept we’re seeing here, NSX's succesor will maintain the ASCC’s powertrain layout.

Thus meaning, out goes the mid-engine (V6), rear-wheel drive layout of the previous NSX, in comes a front-mounted V10 engine and a rear-wheel-drive based version of Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). So I guess no “cheap” Ferrari thrills here? Well, think of it this way: forget the F430 and think 599 GTB Fiorano. The latter not only has a front-mounted engine layout but Ferrari is also developing a 4WD system for it in the near future.-Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the official press release and a high-res gallery

Press Release: Created to take exotic sports car styling to a new level, the concept is designed to incorporate a powerful front-mounted, V-10 engine and a new high-performance, rear-wheel-drive based version of Acura's exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). The concept's exterior demonstrates a dynamic fusion of advanced technology and emotion. The long, pronounced hood features deeply sculpted lines and embossed air vents, both of which hint at the powerful engine beneath. The exterior lines run the length of the body, creating a ribbon-like effect from the front headlights to the rear wheel arches, evoking a feeling of movement and power.

Although modern in its appearance, the Advanced Sports Car Concept retains the subtle cues associated with its predecessor, the NSX. The concept's slim, LED headlights are pushed wide and designed to mimic the pop-up headlights found on the first generation NSX. Other styling hints include a modern take on wraparound rear taillights and the all black cockpit. Wide and low to the ground with a 108.8 inch wheelbase, the concept is anchored by grippy 19 inch front and 20 inch rear performance tires which are mounted to custom billet-machined, polished aluminum wheels. Powerful, ventilated carbon ceramic brake discs and eight-piston calipers accent the wheels. Bold wheel arches and flares add to the concept's aggressive appearance.

The low slung cabin is constructed entirely of tinted glass and sits flush against the body. Door handles are also flush mounted, allowing the sports car to retain a clean and aerodynamic appearance. The Advanced Sports Car Concept features a carbon fiber underbody and the rear is finished with aggressive quad exhaust pipes and integrated rear diffusers, further communicating its high performance potential.

Acura Advanced Sports Car Concept – Next gen Honda NSX previewed in Detroit!

Wow, that was fast! Heck, the first generation NSX first went into production only about… 17 years ago. And it’s not over yet till we see the actual production version of Honda’s stunning NSX successor. See, the car in the picture is, according to Honda own word’s, “a concept that provides a glimpse at the next generation Acura exotic sports car”. Unfortunately that’s the only thing we know about the unexotically named, Acura “Advanced Sports Car Concept”. We’ll have more on the NSX concept closer to the opening date of the Detroit Show in January.

If you’re a bit confused about the name, we remind you that while the rest of the world knows the NSX as a Honda, in the US, it came under the name of Acura.

LA Show: Acura Advanced Sedan Concept

Ts, ts naughty, naughty! We’ve got to hand it to Acura for their creativity and originality in the design of the Advanced Sedan Concept which looks nothing like the Cadillac Sixteen Concept!

But then again, that’s just our opinion cause according to John Mendel, senior vice president, auto operations Acura, “the Advanced Sedan Concept illustrates Acura's commitment to modern design and cutting-edge style. With our advanced design team taking a significant role in shaping future vehicle design, we can expect upcoming products to reflect this progressive, forward-thinking styling." We’ll just leave you to decide.

2007 Acura TL Type-S & TL Revealed

Although the upgraded 2007 Acura TL and the brand-new TL Type-S models were programmed to be unveiled in September, a leak in the Boston Globe newspaper last week seems to have speeded things up as Autoweek now came out with the rest of the pictures. via: Autoweek

2007 Acura TL Type-S: After a three year absence, Acura will once again have a Type-S version of it's TL sedan in the menu. The Type-S gets an upgraded 3.5 V6 engine with 286 horsepower and 256 lb.ft. of torque, mated to new 5speed automatic with paddle shifters, or a close-ratio 6speed manual transmission.

The top-notch TL version's looks are quite subtle. The bodykit includes rear deck spoiler, lower side skirts, slightly different rear bumper, new alloys, all red rear light clusters and quad exhaust outlets. In the interior the Type-S differences itself from the basic TL thanks to its new 3spoke steering wheel, gauges with red ambient lighting etc.

2007 Acura TL: The basic version gets a subtle upgrade for 2007 which includes: new front fascia with a larger grille, slightly redesigned bumpers and light clusters, new 5 spoke alloys, new gauges and steering wheel. No change under the hood as the basic TL is still equipped with the 3.2 liter VTEC V6 that produces 258 hp at 6200 rpm and 233 lb.ft. of torque at 5000 rpm.

Honda & Acura: Oops, sorry, wrong,,,hotline

Talk about speaking literately… Im referring to a toll-free number listed in more than a million Honda and Acura owner's manual printed between August 2005 and July 2006 that was intended to direct them to a government hotline for matters of highway safety. But a typing mistake (instead of 880, they wrote 800…) directed owners to a real hotline where a female voice urged them to call 1-800-918-TALK for "just 99 cents per minute"

Honda sent a letter last week to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, saying that they'll send postcards to dealers and owners in August with the correct NHTSA hotline information -1-888-327-4236- along with instructions to insert the card into the proper section of the manual. via: Windingroad

2007 Acura MD-X Concept

The Acura “MD-X Concept” luxury performance SUV made its world debut today at the 2006 New York International Auto Show featuring bold, sleek exterior styling indicative of the next generation MDX production model.

The MD-X Concept is fashioned as a true driver’s SUV, with its low, wide stance and aggressive design. Its sleek surface lines are modeled after a high-powered mega yacht.

The MD-X Concept features a wider track and longer wheelbase that give the vehicle a sportier, performance look. The profile of the concept reveals a refined SUV with smooth, chiseled lines and an elegant form. A dominant character line runs from the front quarter panel to the rear, evoking the feeling of forward movement. The sharply raked D-pillar creates a stealth, aerodynamic appearance while still retaining the third row seating functionality and cargo carrying capability of the current generation MDX.

The Concept sits low to the ground despite the large 20-inch five-spoke custom alloy wheels, while the large wheel arches and flares add to the Concept’s muscular appearance. The sleek cabin features flush mounted windshield glass, which improves aerodynamics while adding to the MD-X Concept’s smooth and flowing design.

“The smooth lines and sleek shape of the MD-X Concept challenge the conventions of SUV design,” said Ricky Hsu, chief designer for the MD-X Concept. “Our goal was to create the image of a sports sedan while maintaining generous interior volume and utility of a SUV.”

The front hood is accented with pronounced character lines culminating in an aggressive five-sided grille, which gives the MD-X its bold presence. The commanding front grille features a dominant center bar running through a solid aluminum face. The narrow, Xenon High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights appear to grow out of the massive grille, giving the overall front-end a strong, distinct look.

In the rear, the MD-X Concept has an integrated rear hatch, which sits flush against the bumper to create a smooth, clean appearance. LED taillights wrap around the cargo hatch adding to the vehicles wide and low appearance. A rear spoiler improves aerodynamics and the integrated dual exhaust pipes add to the SUV’s sporty style.

Production Version Coming This Fall

The next generation MDX production model will be available this fall, bringing a whole new level of performance and sophistication to the Acura light truck lineup. Track-tuned at the famed Nurburging in Germany, the all-new MDX will feature outstanding performance and handling. Equipped with a powerful, class leading V6 engine and coupled with Acura’s exclusive Super Handling All -Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), the next generation MDX will re-invent the luxury SUV segment just as it did when it first debuted.

2007 Acura RDX

Acura RDX Debuts At 2006 New York Auto Show. All-New Entry Premium SUV features Super Handling All-Wheel Drive & a 240 Hp 2.3 Turbocharged engine

The all-new 2007 Acura RDX Entry Premium SUV, made its production debut at the New York Auto Show today. RDX combines Acura's first-ever turbocharged engine with the breakthrough Super Handling All-Wheel Drive(TM) (SH-AWD(TM)), for sports sedan-like handling in a SUV package. Built on a new global light truck platform, the RDX concept was first designed in California and then developed in Japan. The RDX will be assembled in Marysville, Ohio, on the same line as the Acura TL sedan. It is the first Acura light truck to come from the facility.

ENGINE

As Acura's first Entry Premium SUV, the RDX was the focal point of the development of a special powertrain that would blend 4-cylinder efficiency and 6-cylinder power. The ideal solution came in the form of an innovative new variable flow turbo (VFT) that delivers an unusually broad powerband with little or no lag in throttle response. The RDX is equipped with an all-new 2.3-liter DOHC 16-valve in-line four-cylinder engine with i-VTEC valve control that combines Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) with Variable Timing Control (VTC). With the variable flow turbo working in concert with i-VTEC, the RDX delivers strong power and torque, excellent fuel economy and very low emissions.

Rated output for the RDX engine is 240 horsepower SAE net at 6000 rpm. In terms of torque, the RDX has the highest output of any engine in the Acura lineup, with 260 lbs.-ft. of torque SAE net at 4500 rpm. The RDX is expected to return an EPA-estimated 19/24 City/Highway mileage, while meeting strict CARB LEV-2 ULEV and EPA Tier-2 Bin-5 emissions standards.

4WD SYSTEM & TRANSMISSION

A 5-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift is standard. The electronically controlled drive-by-wire throttle and transmission work together to execute shifts, resulting in exceptionally quick and smooth gear changes. The transmission can function as a conventional automatic transmission or, at the driver's option, can be shifted manually via steering-wheel-mounted paddles.

SH-AWD(TM) is standard in the RDX to maximize available traction while improving handling balance and responsiveness. SH-AWD(TM) is Acura's patented all-wheel drive system that distributes the optimum amount of torque not only between the front and rear axles but also between the left and right rear wheels.

INTERIOR

Inside the RDX, the front-seats feature a high "eye point" that provides a confident field of view. The 3-passenger rear seat has a 60/40 split-folding capability and, when folded flat, significantly expands the load area and increases the cargo volume to 60.6 cubic feet of storage. There are multiple interior storage compartments positioned throughout the interior, including a large (and lockable) dual-level center console located conveniently between the front seats that can securely accommodate a briefcase.

The RDX features an array of electronic features that set it apart from the competition. These include a dual-zone automatic climate control system, a Multi-Information Display (MID), and LED backlit gauges with progressive illumination. Also standard is an impressive 360-watt 7-speaker Acura Premium Sound System with a multi-format 6-disc changer, AM/FM tuner, XM(R) Satellite Radio, and the convenience of an MP3/auxiliary input jack for easily connecting audio devices such as an iPod.

Acura MDX Concept

Acura is going to preview an all new MDX concept at the New York International Auto Show. Product version following later this year

Celebrating its 20th anniversary as a brand, Acura announced plans to debut a concept version of the all-new MDX luxury sport-utility vehicle, April 12, at the New York International Auto Show and released an artist's rendering of the new vehicle. Scheduled to debut later this year, the 2007 Acura MDX will be the second generation of Acura's luxury SUV to be designed, developed and manufactured exclusively in North America.

"The 2007 MDX will speak clearly to the advanced image of Acura and promises to put MDX solidly at the front of the pack with a striking new image, new technology and performance unmatched in the segment," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The designers and engineers working on this new MDX have a tremendous passion for this product that will be evident in all aspects of its design and performance."

The past…

Launched on March 27, 1986, Acura was the world's first Japanese luxury nameplate and the first to challenge established European and American luxury marquees with its world-class engineering, product quality, value and advanced powertrain technology. Its 20-year history of innovation includes the first Japanese exotic sports car, the highly-acclaimed Acura NSX, and numerous technology firsts including the first automotive applications of in-dash navigation, Bluetooth(R) phone integration and DVD-Audio surround sound. Acura was also the first Japanese luxury automaker to develop and manufacturer its vehicles in North America, beginning with the 1997 Acura 2.2CL coupe. Today, nearly two-thirds of all Acura vehicles sold in America are designed, developed and manufactured in North America.

And the…future

In 2006, Acura will introduce two all-new models - the 2007 Acura MDX and the completely new RDX premium entry SUV. Equipped with an innovative new 2.3-liter turbocharged engine and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, the RDX combines sport-utility function with sports sedan handling and performance. The RDX will launch this summer as a 2007 model.
