Honda Attacks Canadian Government Over Low Consumption Rebate Policy

For those of you how have might missed the story, the Canadian Government issued earlier this year an eco-rebate system that provides a refund of up to $2,000 for cars that have an avg, consumption of less than 6.5-liters per 100km, but nothing to those above that line. Honda’s Fit (Jazz in Europe) boasts an avg. consumption of 6.6-litres per 100km while Toyota’s Yaris achieves a 6.4-liters figure, thus, qualifying for a $1.000 CND rebate which helped its sales climb 15% in April (vs Fit’s 1% decline).

One plus one makes two and Honda Canada didn’t stick around with its thumb up its fuel pump. Starting off from Saturday, March 19, 2007, Honda is publishing an open letter on all Canadian newspapers criticizing the government's rebate program. According to Honda, consumers shouldn’t have to choose between an ecoAuto rebate and vehicles that offer the right balance of safety and environmental responsibility. Simply put, Honda’s saying our car has slightly higher avg. consumption over the Yaris cause its safer -U.S. regulators gave the Fit five-star crash worthiness, compared with a four-star rating for the Yaris.

We could give them a point there, but then again, let’s say the Canadian Government changed its decision announcing eco-rebates for all cars with an avg. consumption of less than 7.0-litres per 100 km. How many car manufactures would pop-up the next day repeating Honda’s accusations? Via:Autoblog.com , Source: theglobeandmail

2008 Toyota Corolla Verso - Fresh face & 2.2Diesel with DPF

Unless you want to play a game of “spot the differences” let us enlighten you with what’s changed on Toyota’s 7seater 2008 Corolla Verso: a new grille, redesigned front bumper & headlights, a new, rectangular turn indicator lamp at the rear along with a new chrome-plate finish to the wider number plate trim, enhanced equipment levels that include dual-zone air conditioning and new audio system and finally, the introduction of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) catalytic converter on the 2.2 D-4D 135 engine. See, that wasn’t hard, was it? -Images & Press Release after the jump

PRESS RELEASE

New look for the Corolla Verso

  • New front shape enhancing dynamic styling
  • 2.2 D-4D 135 engine available with DPF
  • Enhanced premium equipment

The Corolla Verso, one of the key core models for Toyota in Europe, is to get a fresh, new look and will offer to customers even more premium equipment levels, while continuing building its success based on its versatility, high level of quality and driving pleasure.

At the same time, the environmental performance of the Corolla Verso is to be enhanced with the introduction of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) catalytic converter on the best-selling 2.2 D-4D 135 engine. The Corolla Verso now boasts one of the most technically advanced and clean diesel engine line-ups in Europe. The 2.2 D-4D 135 is available alongside the D-4D 180 Clean Power engine with Toyota D-CAT which reduces NOx and Particulate Matters (PM) emissions at the same time.

The new look and enhanced equipment levels, including dual-zone air conditioning and new audio system, will build on the existing success of the Toyota Corolla Verso which has proved to be one of the most popular compact MPVs in Europe.

The revised Toyota Corolla Verso will go on sale in Europe from June and July, depending on markets. Corolla Verso offers a sporty styling and is packed with innovative design solutions, allowing seven people to sit in comfort within its compact overall length.

The unique Toyota Easy Flat-7 seating system means all five rear seats can be folded away to create a fully flat floor. The Corolla Verso was the first model in the compact C-MPV segment to offer this feature and it remains one of the easiest to operate.

The Corolla Verso is also one of the leaders in its segment when it comes to safety. It has been awarded five stars for adult occupancy protection by Euro NCAP, as well as four stars for child safety. The Corolla Verso features several segment-firsts; such as the availability of nine airbags including the driver's knee airbag, and the innovative Cornering Assist Monitor, which has been upgraded and revised to make it more effective and easier to use.

With its stylish sporty looks, spacious interior and high level of perceived quality, the Corolla Verso has opened up the market for compact MPVs to a whole new group of customers active couples who are looking for something a bit more special than just another family car.

European sales success

Since its launch in 2004, Corolla Verso has proved to be a unique C-MPV offer in Europe combining a dynamic design high level of quality, driving pleasure and ingenious modularity.

With an exterior design created at Toyota's European design centre, ED2, in the south of France and production based at TMMT manufacturing plant in Adapazari, Turkey, the Corolla Verso has challenged the way European customers view the compact MPV segment.

Unlike sales in the main C-segment (showing a declining trend) the C-MPV segment in Europe is stable at around 1.4 million units a year.

Last year some 95,471 Corolla Verso were sold in the region, a 3% increase on 2005 and representing a 6.6% European segment share. Toyota is planning to sell 93,000 Corolla Verso models in Europe in 2007.

Much of the recent growth in Corolla Verso sales has been stimulated by the introduction of the 2.2-litre D-4D engine range in late 2005. These engines, which offer increased performance, greater driving pleasure and significantly reduced harmful emissions, clearly demonstrate Toyota's commitment to sustainable mobility through advanced powertrain development. The introduction of the 2.2-litre D4-D range has boosted diesel engine sales to 42% of the mix while the segment is at 65%.

Fresh new look

The 2007 Corolla Verso moves with the times and its fresh new look has a strong individuality while retaining the clear Toyota family identity. The new frontal styling, created within the context of Toyota's Vibrant Clarity design language, gives the Corolla Verso more individuality and character with a strong sense of innovation.

There is a new vertical character line linking the upper grille and the bumper, giving the bumper an integrated appearance with the bonnet.

The new front bumper with more presence adds 10 mm to the overall length (now 4 360 mm) and front overhang (880 mm). At the same time, the new styling features more sporty graphics, such as the mesh-style radiator grille and new shape to the turn indicator lamps. Front headlamps have been redesigned to give a more dynamic image and a smoked finish to add sporty emphasis to the halogen headlamps and rear lamps will feature specifically on the D-4D 180 Clean Power model. Rear styling features a new, rectangular turn indicator lamp and a new chrome-plate finish to the wider number plate trim. This helps create a greater sense of width.

There are now four clearly differentiated grade levels (Terra, Luna, Sol and Premium Active) identified with specific wheel trims and featuring newly created alloy wheels for Luna and Sol. To complete the more sporty and dynamic look, Corolla Verso is available in ten exterior colours, five of which are new to the range. The four grade level structure is carried over to the interior trim where there have been further improvements in perceived quality and comfort.

New fabric upholstery has been created for the main body of all three rows of seats with specific fabrics for each grade level. In addition, the rear surface of the second and third rows is covered in carpet fabric to improve the perceived quality and durability.

These trim improvements reinforce the sense of superior quality that is a key feature of Corolla Verso design and build. Tight panel gaps, with superior fit and finish, produce flush surfaces and the geometric, three-dimensional lines of the interior styling give the cockpit a well-defined form. This, combined with the metallic finishes and new blue acrylic panel for the air conditioning, accent the centre cluster and create a high-tech appearance.

Improved environmental performance

As one of the world's leading global vehicle manufacturers Toyota has long recognised its corporate responsibility for the environment and is committed to a comprehensive vision of sustainable mobility. Much progress has already been made in petrol and diesel engines and Toyota continues to research and develop advanced technologies to offer better performance and reduced emissions.

The Corolla Verso range clearly demonstrates how Toyota's advanced technology petrol and diesel engines can offer customers great driving pleasure, good performance and significantly reduced environmental damage through low fuel consumption and effective emission controls.

This position is strengthened by the introduction of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) catalytic converter on the best-selling 2.2 D-4D 135 engine for the Corolla Verso. The new engine will join a line-up which includes the high performance D-4D 180 Clean Power engine with advanced D-CAT technology already among the cleanest diesel engines in its class.

The DPF catalytic converter not only purifies the exhaust of hydrocarbons (HC) and Carbon monoxide (CO) as with a conventional oxidation converter but also significantly reduces particulate matter (PM) as well.

The DPF converter utilises wall-flow construction which forces the exhaust gases through tiny pores in the catalyst substrate walls, trapping the particles.

Unlike many other particulate filters, the Toyota DPF catalytic converter is `self-cleaning', hence is maintenance free throughout the life of the vehicle. An exhaust fuel injection is used to raise the DPF catalyst temperature on a controlled basis and the particles burn off to clear the filter pores. This process requires the addition of a fifth fuel injector which is placed in the exhaust manifold.

Other enhancements to the 2.2 D-4D 135 engine include the fitting of ceramic glow plugs with a higher operating temperature than conventional plugs. These improve low temperature starting and reduce white smoke.

An air-bypass system for the Exhaust Gas Recirculation allows compressed exhaust gas to by-pass the EGR cooler under light engine loads when cooling is not required. This contributes to high power output and low emissions under these conditions.

The new 2.2 D-4D 135 engine with DPF offers the same performance figures as the conventional catalytic converter equipped engine 100 kW (136 DIN hp) maximum power at 3600 rpm and torque of 310 Nm across the engine range 1800 rpm to 2800 rpm.

The Corolla Verso will continue to be available with a choice of two highly efficient, VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing - Intelligent) petrol engines which offer excellent fuel consumption and lively performance. These engines are equipped with advanced `by-wire' throttle control to enhance driving pleasure and optimise fuel consumption. The 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol develops 129 DIN hp and 170 Nm of torque while the highly-efficient 1.6-litre VVT-i petrol develops 110 DIN hp.

A five-speed Multi-Mode manual transmission is available with the 1.8-litre petrol engine offering the convenience of `clutchless' automatic gear changes or sequential manual shift. This has now been equipped with a warning lamp which indicates any overheating in the clutch system.

Premium equipment levels

The style, versatility and premium quality of Corolla Verso have brought new customers to the segment and to Toyota. This facelift will add even more premium equipment to Corolla Verso to further enhance value and driving enjoyment. The premium build quality of Corolla Verso is clearly illustrated in the Toyota safety approach which puts Corolla Verso among the class leaders in the segment.

Corolla Verso is one of six Toyota models that has been awarded five stars in Euro NCAP tests for adult occupant safety. Passive safety systems include a highly rigid and strong passenger cabin which is surrounded by an impact-absorbing structure to divert collision energy away from the occupants. Corolla Verso is available with nine SRS airbags, including a driver's knee airbag, a steering column energy absorbing mechanism, an ISOFIX child seat anchorage system and WIL (Whiplash Injury Lessening) concept seats, which minimise the whiplash effect caused to a passenger's neck in the event of a rear collision.

Corolla Verso's four-disc braking system and optional Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) offer maximum performance and control whether one or seven occupants are inside the car. The top braking performance is enhanced by the Brake Control System which can offer Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).

For optimum driver and passenger comfort, the Corolla Verso will now be available with dual-zone automatic air conditioning. This allows independent digital setting of the cabin temperature to suit the preferences of each passenger.

The already sophisticated and fully integrated audio and navigation system has been upgraded to maintain its position among the most advanced in the segment. The audio system will now play MP3 and WMA files and offers Bluetooth connectivity.

The navigation system is latest generation with clear mapping displayed in 32k colours and using `Michelin-style' colour coding for roads and features which are instantly familiar to most drivers. The system offers voice guidance in 10 European languages and RDS-TMC traffic information.

Operation of the full map navigation system has been made easier by the integration of telephone and voice switches into the steering wheel along with audio controls. The telephone switch is used to operate Bluetooth compatible cellular phones while the voice switch is used to operate the navigation system voice recognition function.

There have also been significant enhancements to the front Corner Assist Monitor and rear Parking Assist Monitor which are one of Corolla Verso's most innovative features. These enhancements make the Assist Monitors more effective and easier to use. The Corner Assist Monitor allows the driver to see areas in front of the vehicle which could be out of the direct line of sight, such as at blind junctions or when turning in confined spaces. It can help confirm the presence of oncoming vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians. The camera for the Corner Assist Monitor has now been changed to one with a three-dimensional view that allows indirect monitoring left, right and in the lower area in front of the vehicle. This enables the driver to see objects that might be in the blind spot immediately in front of the vehicle. Touching a switch on the screen changes the display between two and three-dimensional view. At the same time, the angle of vision from the camera has been increased to give a further extension of the side view.

The rear Parking Assist Monitor which indicates the course of the vehicle to the driver during parking has also been upgraded with a more effective display design and a help function.

The enhanced Corolla Verso, to be revealed at the Barcelona Motor Show, will contribute to make the model a continuous strong competitor in its segment thanks to a more dynamic design and the addition of premium equipments, with the environment friendliness in mind.

The Corolla Verso will be revealed at the Barcelona Motor Show on June 7th 2007.

Toyota rumored to be admitted to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association this week

Citing sources close to the matter, Automotive News Europe reported today that Toyota will finally become a member of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) with the announcement to be held later this week. Toyota not only makes cars in Europe but they’re also selling them like hot croissants with Toyota Group (Toyota & Lexus) finishing in the 8th place overall in Europe in 2006 with 866.831 units. That’s above BMW Group (793.077 units) and under DaimlerChrysler (922.461 units).

So even if several European big-players aren’t exactly enthusiastic about the idea, times have changed and they can’t continue avoiding the Japanese firm any more. What’s that I hear -Hyundai…? Well, if we don’t have any dramatic changes with the Chinese manufactures, I’d guess they’re up next on the list. -Continued below

And a few words on ACEA. The European Automobile Manufacturers Association was founded in 1991, represents the interests of the 13 European car, truck and bus manufacturers at EU level and its headquarters are based in Brussels and made up of the Secretary General and the Secretariat. In 1995, ACEA opened a second office in Tokyo.

Current members of ACEA: BMW Group, Porsche AG, DAF Trucks, PSA Peugeot-Citroen, DaimlerChrysler AG, Renault SA, Fiat S.p.A, Scania AB, Ford of Europe, VW AG, GM Europe, AB Volvo, MAN AG.

Brit pays 65.000 USD for a custom-made Toyota Prius!

That’s about 47.600 EUR or 32.900 GBP, meaning that this guy paid a 63% premium over the retail price of a fully loaded Toyota Prius in the UK which costs 20.082 GBP (40.164 USD or 29.400 EUR)! So, you’re wondering what the heck this Brit did to get the price up so high. Well, for starters, Jemca Toyota in north London prepared the one-off Prius, recruiting specialist suppliers and trimmers to meet his specific requirements. Jemca Toyota resprayed the car in Brechin Slate, a metallic finish that is usually reserved for Lexus models while the interior was reupholstered in hand-stitched leather and a set of polished steel Fox RS3 rims took their place on the cars tires.

And yes, we had the same dorky expression on our face like you’re having right now; a paintjob, a leatherjob and a set of alloys for 25.000 USD? Oh, boy was he ripped off… -More high-res pics after the jump

Oh boy; Toyota surpasses GM in Q1 global sales

We knew it was eventually going to happen but it’s one thing hearing rumours and thoughts and another facing cold hard fact; in the first quarter of the year Toyota’s global sales rose up 9% to 2.350.000 units compared with 2.260.000 units for GM (3% rise in sales). The way things are going, Toyota will most probably manage to top GM at the end of the year as the worlds largest car manufacture.

And while some might say, ok, what’s the big deal in being first or second (apart from GM’s hurt pride), truth is that sales tell us only a fraction of the story. The real big deal is called “market capitalization” and that’s where Toyota totally dwarves its American competitor; at $225 billion the Japanese car maker is worth more 12 GM’s ! Via: Reuters

Toyota Hilux Sport Concept premieres at 2007 CV Show

It’s quite hard to believe that this is an official creation from Toyota and not something that came straight off an episode of MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” TV series. Due to make its debut at the 2007 UK Commercial Vehicle Show (24 to 26 April), the “pimped” Hilux Sport Concept is the work of the Toyota GB and it features monster-sized 22-inch alloys, a sport trucktop, chrome-finished grille and B-pillars, tinted windows and lights and a special-design front guard. Toyota Motorsport also took a shot on the stock 3.0-litre D-4D diesel engine increasing output from 169 to around 200bhp. And in case you’re worried, Toyota has no plans of putting the Hilux Sport Concept into production. -One more pic after the jump

GENEVA: Toyota Hybrid X Concept

Another motor show, another hybrid concept from Toyota. This one proposes a new design language for future Toyota hybrid models. If you scroll down and take a look at the official press release you’ll see that Toyota uses the word “J-Factor” to describe the Hybrid X’s design philosophy. “J-Factor” refers to the local and global acceptance of Japanese-inspired design and cultural form. Sound’s intellectual and sort of artistic doesn’t it? Then of course you take a look at the concept and you return to reality… -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the official press release & more pics

PRESS RELEASE: WORLD PREMIERE OF TOYOTA HYBRID X CONCEPT

New design language for future hybrid models
Four-door, four-seat open-space concept
Interactive interior design
A step closer to zero emissions

Toyota presents a world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show with the reveal of Hybrid X, a concept car that proposes a new design language for hybrid models, while also acting as an innovative technology showcase for future generation hybrid cars.

Hybrid X is a vision for future environmentally friendly motoring. It fits clearly within Toyota’s environmental strategy of offering sustainable mobility for modern families. Hybrid X further extends the use of Hybrid Synergy Drive which is becoming an enabler for vehicle concept innovation and allowing Toyota to push forward to new frontiers.

Hybrid X is designed as a four-door, four-seat open-space concept. It has the dimensions of a conventional family car with an overall length of 4,500mm and wheelbase of 2,800mm. The width is 1,850mm and height 1,440mm.

Hybrid X has been created and developed by Toyota’s European styling centre, ED², in the south of France. It proposes unconventional creative solutions that will themselves potentially become the signature points of a specific hybrid identity.

Hybrid X follows the core values of the Toyota brand design philosophy under two consistent themes: J-Factor and Vibrant Clarity. J-Factor refers to the local and global acceptance of Japanese-inspired design and cultural form, while Vibrant Clarity is the design language used to express the J-Factor. Through Vibrant Clarity, designers will infuse future vehicles with a completely original identity and emotional intensity that will be uniquely identifiable as coming from Toyota.

Interior designer, Laurent Bouzige, says: “Hybrid X is conceived as a multi-sensory experience. There is a formal style in the shape of the vehicle and the material used but every other reaction is linked to the passengers’ senses of sound, smell, sight and touch through interactive ambience.”

The strongest form element of the exterior shape is the two ‘U’ shapes created by the massive upper glass frame area and the unconventional A and C pillars. When viewed from above this gives the impression of a vast X – hence the name of the concept, Hybrid X.

The U-shaped pillars allow the general shape of Hybrid X to achieve a superior aerodynamic form, which is further enhanced by smooth surface lines and the integrated rear spoiler.

At the same time, the glass area greatly enhances visibility to create an ‘open-space’ concept which ‘frames the vision’ in all directions, including up.

Access and innovation are features of the rear-hinged passenger doors which open electronically at the touch of a button. Dynamic hints of driving performance are provided by the customised 20-inch alloy wheels with ultra-low profile 225/40 R20 tyres.

The smooth, aerodynamic lines of the front are unbroken by headlamps. Instead, these are integrated into the dashboard and are now part of the car’s interior. These LED lamps are ‘intelligent’ and display graphic forms through animation, adopting the interactive concept of Hybrid X to communicate safety information to pedestrians or other drivers, such as safety distances, acceleration and braking.

Across the rear the energy-efficient LED lights form another U shape, reflecting the design signature of vehicle as a whole.

The driver can set the ambience within the car via an interface controlling the four senses of sight, sound, touch and smell. LED lighting systems within the car provide a variety of illumination and change in harmony with different musical backgrounds. A perfume diffuser fills the air with a gentle, relaxing aroma, while the use of many different materials and textures on the interior surfaces provides variety to the touch.

The drive-by-wire steering pad features a central screen that relays vital information to the driver about the energy flow path, fuel consumption and gear position. Interactive navigation and Bluetooth connectivity are provided by a second screen in front of the driver.

A third touch screen in the console controls the ambience settings, such as the entertainment and audio systems, lighting operation and air conditioning. A sensitive touch control on the steering pad allows the driver to switch the information displayed on the screens.

The space saving seats are formed using injected foam techniques, which make them comfortable and reduce weight. In order to further promote human interaction, the two independent rear seats can be swivelled by 12 degrees to let passengers enjoy the scenery or a more intimate tête-à-tête.

For now, it is clear Hybrid X is an innovative vehicle that conceives how Hybrid Synergy Drive technology can deliver economical, cleaner and more comfortable motoring. It is a step closer to Toyota’s vision of the ultimate environmental driving technology and its design will influence the entire Toyota brand and its hybrid models in the future.

Toyota Aurion TRD 3.5 V6 Supercharged & Hilux TRD 4.0 V6 Supercharged

Toyota Australia is planning to unveil the Aurion TRD along with the Hilux TRD at the Melbourne International Motor Show on 2 March. Starting off with the Aurion TRD, this is the production version of the Aurion Sports Concept shown at the Australian International Motor Show in October 2006. Albeit a bit toned down in comparison with the concept, the Aurion TRD manages to stand out from the standard models thanks to a full bodykit that includes redesigned bumpers and a set of lovely black rims. Under the hood, the Aurion TRD hides a supercharged 3.5-litre V6 that drives the… front wheels. Personally I’d find that a good enough reason to go for a rear wheel-drive Ford Falcon or a Holden Commodore, but hey; that’s just me.

As for the Hilux TRD, now this sounds very, very interesting and I’m not talking about appearance here. See according to Toyota, the top-spec Hilux will be equipped with a supercharged 4.0-litre V6. As with the Aurion TRD, Toyota hasn’t announced any performance figures but I’m pretty certain that this “thing” has enough oomph stored under its hood for a perfect “tango” on a winding gravel mountain road-Continued: Click “Read More…” below to check out the official press release

PRESS RELEASE: TOYOTA TO REVEAL TRD VEHICLES IN MELBOURNE

Toyota will use the Melbourne International Motor Show to reveal its new locally designed TRD range of prestige performance vehicles. The supercharged 3.5-litre V6 TRD Aurion sports sedan and the supercharged 4.0-litre V6 HiLux sports utility will be launched in Australia in 2007.

Both the TRD HiLux (shown as a concept in Melbourne) and TRD Aurion have extensive performance improvements in engine, brakes and suspension. TRD - for Toyota Racing Development - will become an important brand in Australia. TRD is the long-established umbrella for Toyota racing activities around the world.

The recently formed Toyota Style Australia has been responsible for exterior and interior design and Toyota's TRD Division has taken charge of mechanical specification. Key local suppliers have worked to achieve breakthrough TRD developments which have been endorsed and approved by Toyota's rigorous global quality system.

Toyota expects the TRD brand to provide additional customer engagement with its vehicles. Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner will reveal the TRD brand at the Melbourne International Motor Show on 2 March.

Chicago Auto Show: 2008 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid

Looks like the RAV4’s bigger brother, doesn’t it? Well, this is the completely redesigned second generation Toyota Highlander that was unveiled officially today at the opening of the Chicago Auto Show. Bigger and more powerful than its predecessor, the new mid-size SUV will be offered with a 270Hp 3.5 V6 petrol engine and a 270Hp 3.3 V6 Hybrid system.

Of course, offering a Hybrid system to a 188” (4.8m) long SUV that as Toyota claims, gained about 500 pounds due to its larger size and extensive body and chassis reinforcement is somewhat ironic isn’t it…-Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the press-release and a high-res image gallery

PRESS RELEASE: Toyota Launches 2008 Highlander And Highlander Hybrid At The 2007 Chicago Auto Show

Chicago - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA, Inc., unveiled the all-new next-generation Highlander and Highlander Hybrid mid-size sport utility vehicles (SUV) at a press conference today at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show.

"Highlander holds a unique distinction within the Toyota brand and within the industry," said Don Esmond, TMS senior vice president, automotive operations. "Along with the 4Runner and the FJ Cruiser, it anchors one of the industry's only three-vehicle, mid-size SUV line-ups. Equally important, along with Prius and Camry Hybrid, it is a key component in the industry's only three-vehicle hybrid strategy."

The 2008 Highlander is significantly larger, roomier and more powerful than the vehicle it replaces. Yet its fuel efficiency will be virtually unchanged. It is noticeably quieter, smarter, with improved versatility and ride comfort. It will offer the highest level of standard safety equipment in a segment where safety is at the top of purchase considerations. And, it's all wrapped in a package designed for buyers who want to stand out and make a statement.

Highlander will have no equal to its comprehensive list of standard safety features. It will provide a segment-leading total of seven airbags, including a driver's knee airbag and roll-sensing side curtain airbags for all three rows.

As with all Toyota SUVs for the last three years, Highlander will provide Toyota's STAR safety system, featuring:
• anti-lock brakes,
• traction control,
• electronic brake-force distribution,
• brake assist,
• and for the first time, enhanced vehicle stability control,
• with electronic power steering.

On all models except the base models, it will provide a stand-alone backup camera with a multi-information screen, not tied to a navigation system. And, Highlander will have the distinction of being the first Toyota division vehicle to feature both active head restraints and a new hood and fender system designed to crumple on impact with a pedestrian.

On the outside, Highlander moves away from traditional SUV styling cues with a statement of strength instead of ruggedness; of intelligence over toughness. Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, Calif. sculpted clean, crisp lines, a wide, stable stance and muscular contours to give Highlander an advanced, contemporary, forceful and dynamic personality.

Highlander rides on an all-new chassis derived from the current Camry and Avalon. It is nearly four inches longer and three inches wider, with an inch more ground clearance and three inches of additional wheelbase.

Interior designers took full advantage of Highlander's substantial dimensions. Design intelligence is carried through to the refined interior, where smart and sophisticated blend with practical, flexible and versatile.

The passenger compartment is open and airy. Convenient and innovative interior features such as flexible seating arrangements, and ease of entry and exit, were directly related to customer input.

For example, Highlander's second-row features captain's chairs with armrests that, if needed, can be converted to a bench seat for three passengers. A "Center Stow" seat, when not in use, is hidden in a compartment under the front center console. In its place, passengers can easily snap in the provided center stow center console or choose to leave the area open as a walk-through to the third row. The second row also slides forward and back 4.7 inches and reclines.

Clever and convenient standard features include:
• a third-row bench seat with foldable headrests for a flat rear cargo area,
• a rear glass hatch for quick access to the back (optional on base grades),
• and Smart Start and Entry for Limited and all hybrid models.

When Highlander arrives in July, it will be offered in Base, Sport and Limited grades. All three grades will be powered by a new 3.5-liter V6 that delivers an impressive 270 horsepower -- a 55 horsepower gain over the previous generation's 3.3-liter engine.

Two months later, the all-new Highlander Hybrid will arrive at dealerships. Offered in both Base and Limited grades, all Highlander hybrids will feature Toyota's advanced VDIM stability system. The system integrates:
• full-time four-wheel drive with intelligence,
• electronic brake and throttle control,
• with true electronically-controlled active steering.

Highlander's advanced Hybrid Synergy Drive system has been extensively upgraded and refined for 2008 for both power and economy. The new Highlander gained about 500 pounds, growing significantly in every dimension and receiving extensive body and chassis reinforcement, aimed specifically at achieving best-in-class crash ratings. Not only were engineers able to increase output to 270 net horsepower, they were able to maintain Highlander Hybrid's impressive fuel economy at 31 city and 27 highway.

The Highlander will be loaded with standard-equipped comfort and convenience features. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels will be standard on both Sport and Limited gas models and both hybrid models.

An array of options and accessories will be offered, such as a power backdoor that can be opened and closed with a key fob, a navigation system with an eight-inch screen, a rear-seat entertainment system with a nine-inch screen, and three-zone air conditioning.

Other options include:
• JBL audio with six-disc changer and nine speakers with Bluetooth,
• third-row seat delete to create a second-row model,
• leather seat trim and heated seats,
• and a tow package with a 5000-lbs. maximum towing capacity (class-leading for car & van-based mid SUVs).

"The 2008 Highlander takes the car-based SUV concept to a new level," said Esmond. "I say that with conviction, because it's a category we invented."

The Toyota RAV4, now in its third generation, was the world's-first car-based SUV. In 1998, Lexus established a whole new category of car-based luxury SUVs when it launched the RX300. The debut of Highlander in 2001 marked the beginning of a shift in the mid-size SUV segment, from truck platforms to car platforms.

"As you can see, the new Highlander has raised the bar significantly," said Esmond. "Last year we did the same with RAV4. And in about a year, we'll do the same with both Land Cruiser and Sequoia. The Toyota division now markets a six-vehicle SUV lineup that appeals to specific buyer demographics and life-stages. It is a lineup that gives us enormous flexibility in responding to shifts in the marketplace. We are committed to keeping our products fresh and at the front of the pack."
