Solar powered car on display in Dubai

Since today seems to be an alternative energy themed day (Al Gore testifies before congress to cut fuel emissions) let’s keep the trend going and talk about the first solar powered car designed and created by Emirati Bin Saif and on display in Dubai. The mechanics of the car impressed us more than its not so sleek design.

6 metres in length and 2 metres wide, it’s equipped with four solar panels of 170 watt and two batteries which store the energy so it’s ready to go when you are with the energy stored inside. For all you science freaks out there, the sun provides over 1,000 watts per sq m of energy, the solar cells on the car collect energy from the sun and pass it into the car through the solar cells’ metallic connectors. The down side- it can only reach a maximum speed of 50km/h (about 30 mph) and there is no air conditioning. However, when the day comes that our ozone layer is so depleted that we’ll have to resort to solar powered cars, won’t AC be an everyday necessity? Via: Gulfnews.com
