Lexus RX 400h Ad Banned For Misleading Low-Emissions Implications!

Our friendly British advertising watchdog has done it again by banning a Lexus magazine advert for the RX 400h on the grounds of false claims! For those of you with a hefty memory, the British Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) had banned Ford’s "Focus Zetec Climate" TV ad last year due to complaints from two viewers who said that it was misleading.

The magazine ad for the Lexus RX 400h was headlined "HIGH PERFORMANCE. LOW EMISSIONS. ZERO GUILT". Following the picture of the SUV, there was a text stating "RX 400h. The world's first high performance hybrid SUV ... category-leading low CO2 emissions. A combination without equal. Or compromise". In the small print, Lexus stated that the RX 400h’s carbon dioxide emissions figure was 192g/km CO2. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below

ASA received 10 complainants stating that Lexus’ advert was misleading as it falsely implied that the SUV caused little or no harm to the environment. Lexus argued that the CO2 emissions of the RX 400h were very low compared to those of core competitors within its category and that the prominence of the illustration of the vehicle in the ad clarified the type of car the headline claims referred to and also the class of vehicle to which they applied.

The British advertising watchdog wasn’t convinced. In their release, they scold Lexus not to imply in future that a car caused little or no harm to the environment and had low CO2 emissions in comparison with all cars if that was not the case. Ouch…

ASA PRESS RELEASE

Ad

A magazine ad, for a Lexus RX 400h car, was headlined "HIGH PERFORMANCE. LOW EMISSIONS. ZERO GUILT". Accompanying an illustration of the product, text stated "RX 400h. The world's first high performance hybrid SUV ... category-leading low CO2 emissions. A combination without equal. Or compromise". Text at the foot of the ad stated "... CO2 emissions 192g/km

Issue

Ten complainants believed the claims "LOW EMISSIONS" and "ZERO GUILT" misleadingly implied the car caused little or no harm to the environment and gave a misleading impression of the car's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in comparison with other vehicles. They argued that the "192g/km" emissions figure was high when compared to the emissions of all cars.

Response

Lexus said they had sought approval from the CAP Copy Advice team before launching the ad and explained that, at 192g/km, the CO2 emissions of the RX 400h were very low compared to those of core competitors within its category. They submitted a chart, which compared the fuel emissions of the RX 400h with other vehicles they said were in the same class and showed that the emissions figure of 192g/km was the lowest of all those cars.

Lexus argued that the prominence of the illustration of the vehicle in the ad clarified the type of car the headline claims referred to and also the class of vehicle to which they applied. They believed readers of the ad would understand that the claims were made in relation to sports utility vehicles (SUV) only.

Assessment

Upheld

The ASA acknowledged that, based on the evidence submitted, the CO2 emissions rate for the RX 400h was low compared to other cars in its class. We considered, however, that the headline claim "HIGH PERFORMANCE. LOW EMISSIONS. ZERO GUILT" implied the vehicle's emission rate was low regardless of category and readers were likely to understand from it that the car caused little or no harm to the environment, which was not the case, and had low emissions in comparison with all cars, which was also not the case. We noted the body text, which stated " ... category-leading low CO2 emissions ...", clarified that the low emissions claim was made in the context of the cars category only, but considered that that was not prominent enough or linked to the headline claim. Because of that, and because the words "ZERO GUILT" implied the car was environmentally friendly, we concluded that the headline claim was likely to mislead.

The ad breached CAP Code clauses 7.1 (Truthfulness), 19.1 (Other comparisons) and 49.1 (Environmental claims)..

Action

We told Lexus not to imply in future that a car caused little or no harm to the environment and had low CO2 emissions in comparison with all cars if that was not the case.

2008 Ford Mondeo TV Spot Takes On Prestige Marks

Yes, you’re not mistaken; the car featured in the above screen-shot is a 2008 Audi A6. Wondering what the hell it’s doing in a Mondeo ad? Well, Ford wants to place the new 2008 Mondeo that just went on sale in Europe as an upscale model in the mid-size sedan market. So, what better way to do it than to include premium cars in your ad? -Continued below

The TV spot, that was filmed in 30 locations in and around London, shows a series of cars with balloons attached, floating skyward suggesting that the vehicles have been dispensed with by their owners once they have spotted the new Mondeo. The commercial will premiere on Sky Sports HD channel at half time in the UEFA Champions League Final between Milan and Liverpool in Athens, Greece on Wednesday 23rd May.

Audi A5 "Rhythm Of Lines" TV Ad

Not exactly the ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ themed ad we were expecting from Audi. Dubbed "Rhythm of lines", the artistic and rather pansy for our taste, commercial begins with a swiveling line moving along the screen forming various shapes before joining a bunch of bright coloured swirling lines, "dancing" to the rhythms of classical music. In the end, the lines form the shape of Audi’s new A5 Coupe.

The new ad is the brainchild of advertising agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) who won a $9.8m - €7.3m contract from Audi. Apart from the TV commercial, BBH’s campaign will also include press, outdoor and online (via a microsite) activity, all of which are expected to be unveiled this June.

Video: Skoda Creates A Whole Fabia Made From Sweets!

Skoda wants the new Fabia to be "one of your favourite things." To really prove to you how totally "sweet" this car is, Skoda gathered the country's finest chocolatiers, bakers and bricklayers to help create a life delicious size version of the Fabia with cake and candy. According to the Czech manufacture, "rivets were for raisins, metal for marzipan and spark plugs for sugar." The process was captured on a TV advertisement that aired in the UK on May 17, 2007. We wonder, will a concept like this make people buy the car, or just make everyone hungry?

Audi A4 Commercial: The Luxury Car For People Who Can Park Themselves

Even if the Germans didn’t use a 2008 LS parked in front of the empty car space it wouldn’t take much brain power to conclude that Audi’s taking a hit on high-tech Lexus models. Witty in its own devilish way. We love it!

Hyundai readies aggressive TV Spots pitting against the likes of Lexus & BMW

Get ready for a surprise towards the end of April cause Hyundai’s going to air a new set of TV ads comparing its cars against the likes of Lexus's and BMW's. According to Automotive News the idea behind the TV spots is to push the idea -in an amusing but deadly serious way, that a Hyundai offers the same or maybe more amenities than double-priced “rival” models.

One of the candidate agencies for the job, Siltanen & Partners has already created a few spots and characteristically, in one of them the Sonata is put against the BMW 525i touting the advantages of Hyundai’s mid-sized sedan in power (235Hp vs 215Hp), interior space and pricing levels. The spot closes with the phrase “Sonata - Smart Move”.-Continued: Click “Read More…” below

Likewise in another ad, the Azera is compared with the Lexus LS 460L concentrating on the fact that the Lexus has a self-parking system while the Korean top-range sedan doesn’t. Due to the price different though, the Azera owner can… afford to pay someone to park the car so the ad ends with the phrase –you guessed it, “ Azera – Smart Move”. You can imagine what’s going to happen next year when Hyundai launches the sub-30.000 USD V8 powered GenesisVia (sub. Req): Automotive News

Ford’s "Casino Royal" Ad cut due to misleading implications!

Remember Ford’s Casino Royal Ad that we showed you last year? Well, take a good look at it cause you’re not going to see it again on TV. See, Britain’s Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) announced that it has banned the "Focus Zetec Climate" ad that featured footage from the new Bond film 'Casino Royale' due to complaints from two viewers who said that it was misleading because it mainly showed the Mondeo (it appeared in the film), but ended by showing the Focus Zetec Climate which didn’t participate in the movie at all. Who can blame them... -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see ASA’s official press release

ASA PRESS RELEASE

Ad
A TV ad, for the Ford Focus Zetec Climate, showed a car entering a bright white stage in black silhouette. The ad contained footage from the new Bond film 'Casino Royale' interspersed with shots of the car. On-screen text stated "Retail only. Ends December 18th." After further scenes from the film, the James Bond gun barrel revealed a car in silhouette. On-screen text stated "FOCUS ZETEC CLIMATE LICENCED AND LOADED FROM JUST £12,995". The ad ended with the on-screen text "CASINO ROYALE IN CINEMAS NOVEMBER 16" followed by the Ford logo.

Issue
Two viewers said the ad was misleading because it mainly showed the Ford Mondeo, which they said was due to be released in 2007 and appeared in the film 'Casino Royale', but ended by showing the Focus Zetec Climate. The viewers said the ad misleadingly implied that the Focus Zetec Climate was used in the film 'Casino Royale'.

Response
Ford believed the ad was not misleading and said it promoted Ford's link with the film 'Casino Royale'. They explained that the main part of the ad, which contained scenes from the film purely to engage and entertain viewers, showed the link between Ford and Bond. They asserted that some scenes from the film featured a car whilst others did not and that the ad's final scenes gave specific details of the Focus Zetec Climate's name, price and image.

Ford provided the ASA with three ads, which featured three different Ford vehicles alongside James Bond imagery, to further demonstrate the wide-reaching nature of the Ford and Bond agreement.

The Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre (BACC) reiterated that Ford had negotiated an exclusive brand association deal with Sony / Eon, whereby Ford promoted the 'Casino Royale' film launch-date in return for using the Bond assets and iconography across advertising for the Ford brand. They said that had resulted in various national press ads showing Bond imagery alongside the Ford Ka, Fiesta and Focus, for example. They explained that they approved the ad on the basis that the connection between the Bond film and Ford went beyond the Ford Mondeo that was featured in the film and related to a range of Ford products.

Assessment Upheld
The ASA acknowledged that Ford and Sony / Eon had a contract which involved running a series of promotions linking Ford cars with the film 'Casino Royale'. We noted the final scene of the ad showed the Focus Zetec Climate, with on-screen text identifying it as such, alongside a specific price. Nevertheless, we considered it was not clear that the car that appeared in shots interspersed with footage from the film was different from the car identified at the end of the ad and that viewers were likely to believe that only one car was being advertised throughout the whole ad. We considered that, because of the difficulty in differentiating between the two cars, the ad was likely to give the misleading impression that the Focus Zetec Climate was used in the film 'Casino Royale', which could make it more attractive to some viewers.

The ad breached CAP (Broadcast) TV Advertising Standards Code rules 5.1 (Misleading advertising), 5.2.2 (Implications) and 5.4.1 (Visual techniques and special effects).

Action
The ad must not be broadcast again in its current form.

Nissan Qashqai "Urban Skateboarding" TV-Ad

While not as radical as the Qashqai online skateboard commercials, but definitely more politically correct, Nissan takes upon urban-skateboarding once again to show off its compact crossover. Super Bowl ads: 2008 Ford F-Series Super Duty & 2008 Dodge Ram

We can’t say that we really liked any of the car related ads of this year’s Super Bowl. Super Bowl XLI - Chevy’s Ads

I don’t know about you but we kinda find both these commercials, well, put it this way, totally lame… The first one you see above is called “Car Wash” and it was actually created by a student named
Katelyn Crabb who won a contest organized by GM which involved video entries submitted by 820 teams from 230 schools. The second video, dubbed “Ain’t we got love” features a pack of stars who sing their love for Chevy products. Go figure… - Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the second vid and GM's press-release -Via: Autoblog.com

GM PRESS RELEASE– During Super Bowl XLI, Chevrolet debuted the winning ad from the Chevy Super Bowl College Ad Challenge on network television. The ad was the original concept of Katelyn (Katie) Crabb of North Prairie, WI. Chevy was the first to announce their competition last fall for a consumer-generated ad for the Super Bowl. The competition focused on college students and asked that their ad concept focus on one of Chevy’s cars and crossovers targeted to the youth market, the Aveo, Cobalt, HHR, or Equinox. The winning ad concept was selected after students from across the country submitted their ideas to Chevrolet last fall.

“Chevy wanted to learn what resonates with the younger buyer, and this competition gave us an opportunity to do that. We were able to engage in creative dialogue with them about our brand and teach them about the real-world of advertising. The resulting ad is so much fun!” said Kim Kosak, Chevrolet General Director, Chevrolet Advertising and Sales Promotion.

“It was great to have this opportunity. I was so excited that I got to be on the set when the ad for the HHR was filmed – the car and the set were really cool,” said Katie Crabb – winner of the ad challenge. "I really enjoyed it all - meeting the other finalists, learning about the production process from Chevy - from music selection to editing – it was all fascinating. And now to see the final ad on TV – it’s been an amazing experience,” she said.

The 30 second spot was directed by Bryan Buckley, of Hungry Man Productions, and was produced by Chevrolet and Campbell-Ewald, their lead advertising agency.

Katie came up with the idea for the ad as part of a class project through University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Her faculty advisor, Jessica McBride notified Katie that she was a finalist and would be going to Detroit for an all-expense paid trip in late October. During the trip, Katie was able to learn and experience first hand the advertising world. She and the other four finalist teams spent time learning about the cars and crossovers, and refining their concepts, before presenting them to the executives from Chevrolet and Campbell-Ewald.

“Chevrolet is thrilled we were able to help students realize their dreams of participating in real-world advertising. It was great to work with Katie on this ad. Katie’s a smart girl; she understood the importance of the idea and ran with it. She made a great presentation to us in Detroit. And everyone at Chevy has really enjoyed working with Katie on this commercial. We commend all of the students on their creative ideas, and thank them for participating,” said Kosak.

Chevy continued to engage students throughout the process, posting interviews with students about the ad challenge, supplemental materials from students and other information on the www.chevycollegead.com website. In January, www.cbs.com/chevy started running reality webisodes about the five finalist teams, and CBS The Early Show showed video mockups for a number of ad concepts that were submitted. Katie was named as the winner during CBS’ “Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials 2007” on Friday, February 2, 2007.
